Today is a national holiday in South Africa - Freedom Day. This day, as most freedom days are, was acquired through many long, hard fights in the past 200 years, but especially through the excruciating build-up and demise of the Apartheid-era. Eighteen years ago today, this day commemorates the first post-Apartheid elections in a democratic South Africa and celebrates the meaning of freedom. Those elections of 1994 were the first elections to be held in which the franchise did not depend upon race. Those special 1994 elections also set the stage for revered hero Madiba to take on the presidency of the new democratic country. As you can see by the long queues, the desire of freedom was sought after by millions of citizens.
